What’s new

What’s changed in CommaView.

A lot is changing during the beta. Here’s what’s out now, what arrives with the next app update, and what needs the next runtime on your comma. The app tells you when an update is ready.

xnor and AdventurePilot join openpilot, sunnypilot and StarPilot

Out now

  • xnor-tech’s openpilot. CommaView installs on its xnor and rx builds and names it xnor. xnor runs openpilot’s screen and rx runs sunnypilot’s, and Live View draws whichever your comma runs. On a Rivian running rx, the wheel turns green while the car steers by angle and blue while it steers by torque.
  • AdventurePilot. CommaView installs on it and draws sunnypilot’s screen with what AdventurePilot adds: its lane-centering indicator, the CURVE chip on the comma 3X screen, and its steering mode’s wheel tint.
  • Your fork’s name on the comma 3X screen. Its startup alert names your fork, as the comma does, where it always said sunnypilot.

With your comma’s runtime update (0.0.59)

  • Two more forks. The runtime recognizes xnor-tech’s openpilot and AdventurePilot, where setup used to stop with “unsupported upstream remote”.
  • Every GPS fix. The app gets each GPS fix as openpilot publishes it, up to 10 a second, with how old it is, instead of the newest one once a second.

StarPilot, screens that match your fork, and a new leaderboard

Out now

  • StarPilot. CommaView now works with StarPilot on the comma 3X and comma four, installed from StarPilot’s own installer. Live View follows its Camera View, driver camera included, and tells you when its Disable Logging setting has stopped the video.
  • Screens that match your fork. The comma four and comma 3X screens draw what your fork draws on the comma: its font, its alerts and how it grades the camera. On StarPilot they bring its own HUD, path and widgets, such as its speed-limit sign, lead info, navigation card and developer sidebar.
  • Choose a screen in Display. Settings › Display picks the onroad screen from a dropdown, and its preview shows your own comma’s fork and cameras.
  • Every frame in Live View. Live View now draws every frame the comma sends, up to its 20 a second, where it used to skip some. The comma 3X screen is drawn by the phone’s GPU (Android 9 and later), so it keeps up with the video.
  • Live View that recovers. It no longer gets stuck on “Reconnecting… Attempt 1”, and with the car off it waits and opens the video by itself when the car starts. One status panel says what’s happening, with its buttons, instead of a flash of “openpilot Unavailable” as the video starts.
  • A reboot after runtime updates. After your comma’s runtime is installed or updated, the app asks you to reboot it with a Reboot button, and Live View and Record wait until you do; the comma never reboots by itself. Home’s update card is smaller: tap it for every step.
  • Home keeps up. Home shows within seconds whether each comma is there, without pulling to refresh, and says Checking while it looks. A new app update shows up soon after it’s out, each time you come back to the app.
  • A redesigned leaderboard. Standings and Achievements, for This week, Last week or Lifetime: how far behind the comma above you is, what’s left for your next achievement, and all 17 to earn. Your profile gathers your figures and settings, and tablets and head units keep a You panel beside the board.
  • The podium before you join. Home shows this week’s podium in three stepped places with their medals, and you can look at the leaderboard before opting in.
  • A calmer replay queue. Each drive is one row with its progress, Pause, Resume or Retry, and a menu to move, report or remove it, and you can drag drives into a new order. Progress no longer stops at 99%: saving the finished replay shows as its own step.
  • Replays that match Live View. Replays draw your fork’s screen and the offline-map speed-limit sign as Live View did, and mark any moments the comma saved no HUD data for.
  • Better offline maps. Search in Add map works with the on-screen keyboard, Download stays on screen on Android 15, and downloads carry on in the background. Where your maps have no answer, the sign shows sunnypilot’s limit.
  • Fixes. A phone or head unit with the wrong clock no longer locks you out of the beta. GREEN LIGHT and LEAD DEPARTING alerts on sunnypilot always show their circle, and the numbers on CommaView’s speed-limit signs no longer nearly touch.

With your comma’s runtime update (0.0.58)

  • Every drive counts. Your comma records each drive as you drive, so one that turns off with the car keeps its drives, even those that start before it knows the time. The leaderboard’s This week fills in during the drive.
  • StarPilot and your fork’s screen. The runtime installs on StarPilot, finds drives saved with its High Bitrate Recording or Konik settings, and sends what your fork’s screen draws, so the comma four and comma 3X screens can match it.
  • Live View gets its camera back. Your phone or head unit takes the camera back at once when it reconnects, and one that drops off the network frees it within about ten seconds.
  • Lighter on your comma. The runtime builds openpilot’s telemetry itself and sends it in a compact form, keeps HUD data only around a recording, and tells the app within seconds whether your comma is there. Record no longer fails on a busy comma.
  • Replays that stay available. Finished drives are no longer marked damaged after the comma restarts while parked, and one long drive can no longer stop other drives’ replays.

Offline maps and speed limits, regional signs, and a replay queue

Out now

  • Offline maps and speed limits. Download a country or a US state in Settings › Offline maps, and CommaView shows the speed limit from your comma’s live GPS once its location is on. Downloads pause, resume and update, and the limits are for display only.
  • Speed-limit signs for where you drive. CommaView’s sign takes one of seven styles from your comma’s location: the red-ring circle used in most countries, the UK and Taiwan included, or the signs of the US, Canada, Japan, Sweden, Finland and Iceland, Ireland and Brazil, or Australia.
  • A steering crescent. A crescent under the CommaView overlay’s speed cluster shows how hard openpilot is steering, and the cluster has its glass look back. MAX and the speed limit stay in place even when they’re unknown.
  • Fill screen or Full camera. In landscape the CommaView overlay fills the screen by cropping the camera, or shows the whole picture with Full camera. New recordings keep the crop you chose.
  • A replay queue. Queue several drives and their replays are made in the background, picking up where they left off if the connection drops. Pause, resume, retry or reorder them from Queue in Recordings.
  • Recordings and maps for any screen. Recordings and the offline map library are redesigned to fit phones, tablets and head units, and Vehicle location now fits short screens and large text.
  • Clearer recording problems. When a drive can’t be made into a replay, Recordings says why, and a report sent from there includes the details we need to look into it.
  • Home and the leaderboard. Driving this week and Vehicle location stay on Home while you’re offline, and Home shows this week’s podium. Once you’ve joined the leaderboard your totals sync on their own, even from the comma’s hotspot.
  • Runtime updates without an app update. Your comma’s runtime can be updated when a compatible one is out, without waiting for a new app, and its progress is clearer.
  • Beta sign-in. During the beta, CommaView asks you to sign in with the account your invitation went to. Your pairings and settings are kept, and the app works offline while your access pass is valid.
  • Clearer Wi-Fi power saving. Your comma’s Wi-Fi power saving is a plain on or off choice that shows the system default and says when a change takes effect.

With your comma’s runtime update (0.0.57)

  • Reboot from the app. When an update needs your comma to restart, Reboot comma now in the app restarts it for you. It works only while the car is off or parked.
  • Speed limits from fresh GPS. On sunnypilot your comma sends its newest GPS fix rather than a cached position, so offline-map speed limits follow where you are.
  • Clearer drive status. Your comma tells a drive that’s still incomplete from one that’s gone, so Recordings can explain which, and keeps finished drives healthy.

A redesigned CommaView, our own overlay, and the leaderboard

Out now

  • A redesigned app. Every screen is rebuilt in a new design: the home, Live View, Recordings, Settings, pairing and setup. It comes with a new icon and launch screen, and a Daylight mode for bright days.
  • A new home. Your car on its stage with Open Live View, then Driving this week, Vehicle location, your recent recordings and the leaderboard. Arrange it with Customize home. Your comma shows as connected on its own, with no Reconnect to tap.
  • Made for tablets and head units. On a wider screen the home becomes a dashboard, Settings and Recordings open beside their lists, and pairing fits any head unit.
  • The CommaView overlay. Our own onroad screen: your speed, MAX and the speed limit in one cluster, lane lines that show how sure the model is, driver monitoring and alerts that stay out of your way, and Canada’s MAXIMUM sign where it applies. The comma 3X and comma four screens are there too, and you can switch screens right from Live View.
  • Simpler display settings. One Onroad overlay section with a live preview, and CommaView chosen for you.
  • Better recordings. Replays look exactly like Live View, play in the app, and can be made with the car in Park. They show their progress while they’re made. Each drive has a thumbnail, and you’re warned before your comma deletes one.
  • Recordings on all your devices. Your recordings follow you between your paired phones and head units.
  • Driving insights and Vehicle location. Your week’s distance, drive time and drives from your comma’s own logs, and where your car is and where you parked, on a dark map. Location stays off until you turn it on.
  • A device page. Your comma’s status and runtime in one place. From there you can open Live View, manage Wi-Fi power saving, repair, and share logs when you need help.
  • Updates in the app. App updates download in the background, with an update button on every screen. Runtime updates, repairs and uninstalling need no SSH. Each update shows its steps as it goes, and the home keeps you posted. Anything that can’t happen while you drive waits until the car is in Park.
  • Leaderboard. Opt in from the home with a display name to see this week’s podium, last week’s results and lifetime rankings. Badges are earned from your comma’s own recorded distance, and a comma.ai lifetime board shows the total comma.ai has for your comma.
  • Crash reports. They help us fix problems faster, with personal details stripped out. You can turn them off in Settings.
  • Fixes. The comma four’s MAX speed no longer flickers when engaged. The comma 3 now says plainly that it isn’t supported; CommaView works on the comma 3X and comma four.

With your comma’s runtime update (0.0.56)

  • Updates in Park, even at home. Keep the car on in Park with openpilot disengaged, or set the comma up on your desk. A drive is never interrupted.
  • Safer updates. One at a time, and if anything goes wrong your comma goes back to the version it had.
  • What powers the new features. Driving insights, Vehicle location, recordings across your devices and leaderboard syncing all come from the new runtime. The app installs it for you.

A new home, your car’s picture, and one place for your account

Out now

  • Your account at my.commaview.com. Sign in with a code sent to your email, download the app, and see what’s new. It’s also where betas and updates come from now; Firebase App Distribution is gone.
  • Updates from your account. The app checks your account for new releases and offers them in the app. Each app release comes with the runtime it was tested with.
  • Feedback, and a feature board. Send an idea, a problem or praise from Settings in the app, with a support bundle if you want us to look closer, and vote on what we build next on the feature board at my.commaview.com.
  • A new picture of your car. Every supported car has a new picture in one style, the same size and lighting, that sits cleanly on any screen.

Next app update

  • A new Devices home. Your car on its stage in one card with Open Live View, then Driving this week, Vehicle location and your recent recordings.
  • Made for tablets and head units. On a wider screen the home becomes a dashboard, and Settings and Device settings open beside their list.

Next runtime update

  • Driving insights. Your week’s distance, drive time and drives, from your comma’s own logs.
  • Vehicle location. Where the car is while you drive, and where you parked. Off until you turn it on.
